Sep 17, 2005 - 10:32:00 AM - The CHS tennis team opened up district play this week with a 10-0 victory over Mineral Wells and a 10-7 win over Fort Worth Brewer.
"The win over Mineral Wells isn't much, but beating Brewer is a little more significant," coach Stacey Foster said.
Mineral Wells is the cellar dweller of the district, but Brewer may pose the biggest threat to the Jackets in their quest for the district crown.
"Brewer is a tough team, together with Aledo those are the only two teams in our way," Foster said.
After going to Mineral Wells and posting a shutout the Jacket's focus was truned toward the Brewer Bears. Thanks to a strong showing from the girls team the Jackets were able to pull out a close victory.
"We won because of the girls, we only had two boy's singles win their matches," Foster said.
The team feels the same way as Foster.
"Together the girls played really well, hopefully the boys can get it into gear in time for our match with Aledo," junior Lisa Mertz said.
Next week the Jackets will have a tune up match versus Joshua and then the matchup with Aledo, at home, will occur the week after. Aledo will be the biggest test yet for the Jackets as the Bearcats defeated Brewer 10-4, a wider margin than that of the Jacket's victory.
"Brewer always matches up with us better, we always seem to have an easier time with Aledo," Foster said.
A district title for the Jackets may be in sight in the very near future.
