Oct 7, 2008 - 6:10:44 PM - The Cleburne High School Golden Pride Band won the championship trophy in its division at Saturday’s United States Scholastic Band Association North Texas Regional Marching contest.
The Pride received the highest marks in the Group IV open class, involving eight area bands, for their UIL marching program “Electronic Evolution.”
Cleburne also received the general effect award in its class, which is based on several factors including visuals, set and audience impact.
“We are very excited for our students,” said Band Director Jason Jones. “They have been working harder each year that I have been in Cleburne.”
Principal Monte Pritchett said the Golden Pride’s win was “good news for the band and Cleburne High School.”
“It’s always exciting to see a program do well, and the Golden Pride has always done just that in representing their school and community,” Pritchett said. “Jason Jones and his staff do a great job.”
“While this is a win for the Golden Pride, the contest and final standings in our class were very close,” Jones said. “The consensus from both our students and directors is that it is early in our competitive marching season, and we have lots of work to do. Our goal is for the USSBA performance to be our ‘worst’ of the year, allowing us to get better each week. We are still working to improve our technical marching and music skills.”
The Golden Pride’s win at the USSBA marching contest should give them momentum going into Saturday’s Unleash the Sound Marching Festival in Aledo. The color guard and drum line will participate in separate events at 11:25 a.m. with the entire band scheduled to compete at 2:15 p.m. in the preliminary round. The top 10 bands will advance to the finals.
“It was amazing to have all that spectator support last week,” Jones said. “It really motivates and excites the kids. We’re hoping for that same support in Aledo.”
