Friday night’s halftime performance by Cleburne’s Golden Pride Band will also serve as a warm-up for its first competition of the season — Saturday’s United States Scholastic Band Association marching contest at Burleson High School.

The Pride will unveil the third — and final — movement of their UIL marching program, “Electronic Evolution,” before the home crowd in attendance at Friday’s football game with Midlothian.

Golden Pride Band Booster Joy McHargue said she hopes the home crowd will turn out Saturday to give the band a send-off as it departs for the first of two scheduled competitions before the Region VII UIL marching contest, set for Oct. 18.

“The band will load up and leave the high school at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday,” McHargue said. “Anyone who would like to wish them well and send them off with cheers should meet at the high school — and bring signs and noisemakers.”

“It has become a tradition to line the route from Cleburne to Burleson with Golden Pride fans to encourage the band as they begin their contest season,” she said. “We’d like the cheering to begin before they even leave the parking lot.”

The USSBA North Texas Regional contest will begin at 1:30 p.m., with Cleburne scheduled for a 6:35 p.m. performance time.

Cleburne’s 2008 UIL marching contest piece, “Electronic Evolution,” written by Frank Sullivan, takes the audience through a musical and visual journey from the birth of electricity, featured in the first movement — watch for Ben Franklin’s kite — to the Industrial Revolution, representing the vast growth in America’s industry, due to electricity.

The third movement, “Plastic,” blends tradition with “techno” as electric guitars and other instruments requiring the use of electricity join in with the tubas, trombones and tenors, symbolizing today’s fast-paced computer age.

“The kids have really enjoyed this year’s show, and that is reflected in their performance,” said Golden Pride Director Jason Jones. “They have been working very hard to put the best show they can on the field, and we are very excited to begin our contest season.”

The Golden Pride is among seven marching units that will be compete in the Group IV Open division at Saturday’s event, which also includes bands from Alvarado, Arlington-Lamar, Granbury, Stephenville, Joshua and Springtown. The results will be announced and awards presented at 8:30 p.m.
