Has Immigration Been Forgotten?

By Aubreey Flores

Sep 19, 2008 - 8:53:05 AM -

In years past and most likely years to come, candidates for office have used lies and manipulation to win votes.  They make empty promises and are careful of what they say in order not to lose voters’ support.  Usually they avoid the little things, things that can simply be forgotten when they “WOW” supporters with their big plans.  But not McCain and Obama, they have started a new trend.  They would rather win voters over by promising them things personally like healthcare and better gas prices.  Now I agree that those things are nice, but there is also the country itself to worry about.  Remember?

It wasn’t too long ago when immigration was the headline for most newspapers, or the main telecast for the news stations.  Has America put immigration on the backburner?  Maybe the candidates will come up with a plan when it is more convenient for them.

The candidates know that if they say one way or the other they will lose a big chunk of votes on either side.

In an interview with the associated press back in 07’ McCain knows to play it safe, “We need to secure our borders.  That is first priority.” Ok, but how are you going to go about doing that, and what about the people who are already here?

There are over 11 million people in the U.S. that are here illegally and McCain says he will think about sending them home before they can apply for citizenship.  Is that really the best he can do?

In 2007 McCain introduced a comprehensive immigration reform bill to the senate, and then later stated he was not going to vote for it.

It does not make sense why propose a bill and then not vote for it. It seems to be a grey area that he dose not want to deal with.

Obama voted for the “dream” act which would allow illegal immigrants under 30 to stay in America.  At the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's Annual Gala he says not to expect any immigration reform from McCain, but never did he state any kind of plan to make it better. Once again it is another way for him to attack McCain but not hurt himself.

America is made up of all kinds of people, different races, ages, cultures, at one point we were called the melting pot. I cannot say McCain on Obama would get my vote, if I were able to vote, because neither of them can come up with a solution to a problem that is close to my heart.
