Break is over, time to go to work
By Monte Pritchett, Principal

Jan 26, 2009 - 11:44:22 AM - It is that time again for your monthly update of the events of CHS. I guess you could say, “As the yearbook turns.”
I
trust that all of you had a fantastic holiday period. Students and
teachers were glad to see the break arrive, and I am sure some of you
were glad to see January get here so students would be back in school
and out of the house.
As for me and my household, the break was a good one, and it was good to see family and friends and enjoy the holiday spirit.
Let’s
start off by talking about the choir. Kim Sisk, a senior at CHS, was
named to first alternate for the all-state choir. Congratulations to
Kim. The CHS show choir, under the direction of Adam Delka and assisted
by Pam Elam, will present a dessert theater performance at 7p.m. Feb.
7, in the high school commons area. Tickets are $5 each and can be
purchased from choir members, or contact the school at 817-202-1200.
Desserts will be donated by The Lemon Sisters, Black Tie Bakery, and
friends of the choir. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear the choir and
satisfy your sweet tooth. What is another hour on the treadmill?
Lisa
Benson, sponsor of the Business Professionals of America, took several
students to the regional leadership conference for Business
Professionals of America last weekend, and the results were outstanding
for our students. The following students qualified for the state
contest: first in advanced accounting, Brianna Garcia; first in
computerized accounting, Kaley Owenby; first in interview skills,
Garrett McClure; first in prepared speech, Patrick Wilborn; first PC
servicing and troubleshooting, Matt Lee; and second in payroll
accounting, Jacob Hite. Other students placing high in their
competitions were Haley Cuevas and Jacob Hite in presentation
management team and Lauren Taylor in advanced word processing skills.
Way to go, and see you in Austin.
The color guard competed in
the Scholastic Three A division and placed first out of eight other
guard teams. Their score was high enough that they were promoted to
Scholastic Two A moving into future contests. The CHS winter guard
scored fifth overall out of the small SAAA, SAA and SA divisions. This
is quite an accomplishment. Their show is called “Lift Me Up,” and
features flag work, weapons work and dance. The show was choreographed
by their instructors, Junior Marquez and Matt Gibson. The guard was
assisted by 17 band students who helped move, set up and break down the
floor and props. The next winter guard competition will be Feb. 27 at
Brewer High School in Fort Worth.
The UIL speech team competed
at Princeton High School on Jan. 10. Kelly Blevins and Ethan Reeves
advanced to the semifinals. Garrett Whitehead placed seventh and Daisey
Fuentes placed third in poetry interpretation. Nicole McDonald placed
third in prose, and Will Holleman placed sixth in persuasive speaking.
They will travel to Granbury this weekend and the entire UIL team will
compete in Glen Rose on Saturday. Good luck.
The Annual Golden
Girl/Golden Jacket will be at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Don Smith
Performing Arts Center. Get out your old Beatles albums and prepare for
Beatlemania.
Several Yellow Jackets were named to the all-county
football team. Justin Gauntt, Shadi Perez, Chris Clark, Joel Jernigan,
Michael Shelton and Trace Turner represented CHS for their effort this
fall on the grid iron. Congratulations Jackets.
Calling all
eighth-graders from Wheat and Smith middle schools. CHS will have a
night reserved for you and your parents from 6-8 p.m. Feb. 24. It will
be a time for you to come to the commons area of the high school and
see all of the different class offerings and programs CHS has for you
for the 2009-10 school year. See you there.
Put this date on
your calendar. Make a note on to stick to your refrigerator. Put this
date in your daily planner. March 3 will be the first in the series of
TAKS test at CHS. On this Tuesday we will test freshmen on reading,
sophomores will test on English language arts, and juniors will test on
exit level ELA. There will also be an exit level retest for those who
have not passed in previous attempts.
Needless to say it is
kind of a big day for us at CHS and the rest of the district too. In my
days of coaching I realized the importance of team work. We need to
work together on this day of state-mandated testing. It will be
important to make sure the students get a good night’s sleep before the
day of the test. Fix them their favorite breakfast and make sure they
arrive at school on time. Have them leave their cell phones and iPods
at home this day. The state wont allow them in the testing areas.
Please
don’t plan dental appointments, doctor’s appointments or anything that
will pull the students out of school; it upsets the testing atmosphere,
and it is against testing procedures to do so. Know that at the high
school they are probably going to be in the testing mode all day and in
the same classroom.
We want to make sure each student has an
opportunity to do as well as they can on this test. We will offer
tutorials starting two weeks before this round of testing. During the
weeks of Feb. 16-19 and Feb. 23-26, CHS will be having TAKS tutorial
sessions from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the CHS library. Anyone who wants some
extra help is encouraged to take advantage of these free tutorial
sessions. If you have any questions about testing please call the high
school, and we will be glad to help you in any way we can. The rest of
this week will be for exit level retest in math, science and social
studies.
Got it? Mark your calendar ,and remember to help us get to be a recognized campus. It takes teamwork.
The second semester is always a busy time at CHS. Please let us know if we can help you in any way. Go Jackets.
