In
Gaza, a battle rages on that has rocked the foundation of this city to its core, as the two groups of Israelis fire back and forth at each other, despite the Pope’s call for a cease-fire. According to Khabrein.info, the death toll is nearing 900 people and doesn’t look to be slowing down.
It’s been all over the news and all we’ve heard about within the past week or two. A battle in Gaza, with an estimated 900 people dead, that has been nothing but a blood bath and it doesn’t look to be stopping anytime soon, despite who helps out or who calls a truce.
The battle, between the Hamas and Fatahs, has been going on since December 27th and is still going on today, ignoring all pleas from the Pope, who attempted to call the fighting to a close and failed, and even Syria, who attempted not to take a side on the entire battle and instead, gave harsh words to both sides for their actions.
For now, that’s all anyone has done and probably will do until President Barack Obama takes office and, with people’s hopes on his shoulders, can stop all the fighting.
The Examiner, a local
Dallas newspaper, states that Obama said that he can’t take a side on
Gaza until he has taken oval office, otherwise, the two foreign policy measures may contradict.
However, according to another newspaper, AFP, Obama claims he ‘is closely monitoring global events, including the situation in
Gaza’ so that when he takes office on the 20th of this month, he can be prepared for whatever lays ahead.
President Bush has already taken almost the same stance on the
Gaza attacks, saying he will also monitor them closely and for now, will sit back and wait. Bush has some sort of insight as to why the
Gaza battle started and according to headlines everywhere, ‘Bush blames Hamas’ for the attacks in
Gaza, but isn’t offering a solution for how to stop them.
The Israeli government, however, has already taken a step towards trying to end the blood bath by disallowing weapons from
Egypt to make their way into
Gaza as well as sending out more troops to protect their citizens. Nine hundred citizens are dead, over 3000 wounded and out of those 900 killed, 50 percent were children. The government has to take some sort of action soon, or else, the number will continue to rise and more lives will be lost.
But the Israelis aren’t the only ones truly affected by this attack on
Gaza, because soon after the attacks began,
US gas prices began to rise. Since the battle is in the
Middle East, where most of the U.S gets its oil, the oil companies have driven the price up in fear.
Within the past few days, gas prices have risen over 15 cents and will continue to rise until this battle is stopped.
The only hope that we have left for
Gaza is what may come when President Obama takes office and what his plan may be in order to save the citizens from anymore disaster. According to the Associated Press, there is a small light at the end of the tunnel. The U.S is said to be planning an evacuation, one that could save some Americans, as well as some
Gaza residents who have been in the line of fire for much too long. Some citizens have already been evacuated, most of them American families, but the U.S hopes to rescue more soon.
All we can do now is hope for the best and look to President Obama when he takes office. He may or may not bring some help for
Gaza and all we can do now is sit and wait for things to happen while the
Gaza citizens cling to their families and homes.
