When a game is well-played and well-coached, it’s hard to walk away with a loss. It’s equally hard when your best shooter puts up 28 points, eight of which were 3-pointers.
The Yellow Jackets (20-14) lost to seventh-ranked Arlington Sequin (28-5) Friday night in overtime. The loss ended the Jackets’ bid for a state-championship.
Down 15-2 at the end of the first quarter, the Jackets led by senior Jacob Kelsey battled back to go up 26-25 at the half.
Kelsey ended the game with 28 points.
“The guys never gave up,” assistant coach Lyle Lackey said. “They deserved to win, but sometimes that doesn’t happen.”
The teams were neck-and-neck during the second half. Sequin’s Kourtney Moore answered Kelsey’s scoring drive with a 23-point game.
After a move to slow down the game and put the ball in the hands of its leading-scorer for a last second attempt to win, Kelsey’s attempt hit the rim and bounced out sending the game into overtime.
“We had no reason to believe that Jacob wouldn’t make the shot,” head-coach Jeff Cody said.
Moore carried Sequin in overtime, making 7 of 8 free throws.
“The kids played their best game,” Cody said. “Someone had to win. I just wish we were the one’s playing Tuesday night.”
