May 12, 2006 - 8:20:00 AM - Earlier this week Denison softball coach Ashli Wigington told a reporter that the bad part of playing a one game playoff means there is no room for error. She now knows her words were very true.
Denison (20-10) comitted three key errors during the seven inning loss to the Lady Jackets (26-9).
After a triple by third baseman Amberly Waits in the first inning, an error by the Denison second baseman allowed Waits to score and senior second baseman Sam Oleksak to arrive safe at first.
Another throwing error by Denison shortstop Britny Tuley into the Cleburne dugout in the fourth allowed Oleksak to advance to second. Pitcher Katie Cowan ground out to advance Oleksak to third. With one out and one on catcher Bailey Thigpen advanced to first on another throwing error by Denison scoring Oleksak.
In the top of the fifth leading 2-0, Waits laid down a bunt for a single. Waits stole second on a throw down from the Denison catcher. Shortstop Janaye Richardson hit a line drive toward pitcher Abby Burns who deflected the ball into shallow center field allowing Waits to score the third and final Lady Jacket run.
Cowan recorded eight strikeouts and gave up three hits to take the win 3-0.
Cleburne advances to the next playoff round againt the winner of the Pampa/Andrews series, which begins today.
