Smoke Clearing from Public Places

Arizona and California were two of the first states to step up and outlaw smoking in public places and have stuck with it closely. Perhaps other states should start to take notice of these state’s examples and maybe we could all stop involuntarily taking in the poison from the air that we have to breathe.

It happens all the time. We are standing in line at a fast food restaurant, watching the kids play in the play area while their parents watch them closely from inside and have to suffer with the smell of second hand smoke. The smoke snakes its way through our lungs and affects our hearts.

The class valedictorian who left Cleburne in 1987 to pursue her dream of studying medicine and returned home in 2000 to practice medicine has been named this year’s Cleburne High School Ex-Students Association Coming Home Queen.

Stephanie Johnson Morton, voted by her classmates as “Most Likely to Succeed,” is among the CHS alumni to be honored at Homecoming festivities Thursday and Friday.

Have you ever noticed how many kiosks have popped up in you favorite mall? And just about all of them are selling cell phones. Teens can actually design their own graphics and have the graphic airbrushed on the face of the phone itself. They face plates and antennas that light up on each ring. Just drop by a kiosk next time your at the mall, you'll see what I mean.

WASHINGTON _ Sounding the alarm against a possible global flu pandemic, President Bush on Tuesday asked Congress for $7.1 billion in emergency funds to help prepare the country for a possible outbreak of the deadly avian flu.

The flu virus, H5N1, is highly lethal, and while it doesn't spread easily to people, human beings have virtually no immunity. If the virus mutates into a form that passes easily among humans, it could kill millions of people around the world. The virus is continually evolving, and the number of countries where birds are infected and come into contact with humans continues to increase.

Every year students fill the school, anxious to begin a new year. However, some of these students are having to learn more than just the ways of a different school, they're learning the ways of a different country.

This year Olena Matvinyenko, 16, decided she wanted an oppurtunity to change and grow as a person, to learn American culture, make new friends and improve her English. Knowing only that it would be an unforgettable experience, she signed up to be a foreign exchange student for a full school year.

As soon as the bell rings, the students gather their belongings and stampede to the nearest exit. One particular teenager gets in his truck and turns the ignition as he plans out the rest of his evening. It's not that hard to do: grab a bite to eat, get to work, maybe do that algebra assignment--get gas? He looks at the near empty light puzzled. It fills like all he ever does is put gas in his truck to get to work and work to put gas in his truck. Even if it didn't stay in there very long.
